Save Mayfield Music

"I can’t imagine anything more soulless than an arts school’s abandonment of it’s own creatives."

About Us - Our Goals

What is the Mayfield Repertoire Project?

The Mayfield Repertoire Project was created by a group of students in the music program at Mayfield Secondary School in Brampton Ontario in response to 3 of their 4 repertoire courses being cut.

The project's aim is to not only have our repertoire courses reinstated but also to raise awareness of the cuts being made to arts programs across various school boards as well as the importance of arts in students' education.

Why is this initiative important?

By the beginning of the 2026-27 school year, Mayfield Secondary School will no longer offer the same number of jazz studies courses previously available, being cut down to just one vocal jazz studies course. These Jazz Studies courses have been a part of Mayfield Music since 1987, and having them removed is removing almost 40 years of history and identity attached to our school.

Some of these repertoire ensembles, such as Magnetics and Blues Alley, have been a staple of Mayfield's music program for many years. In addition to these ensembles getting the opportunities to be invited to perform in various places, the students in these courses have been given various first-hand learning opportunities, whether that be working on repertoire in the classroom or getting feedback, clinics, and/or workshops from professors, adjudicators, clinicians, etc.

Current students and graduates alike have committed their own time to these courses to develop their musical skills and build community. Eliminating these courses would deny future students the same educational opportunities as those before them.

To spread awareness and fight against these unfair changes, it all depends on us as students to spread the word. This issue not only affects music students but also Mayfield students as a whole and any other students from schools with arts programs facing similar changes.

Our Mission

Our mission is to raise awareness in a respectful manner on the importance of these courses and their history. We would like to raise awareness on their importance by creating a petition and getting alumni to comment on how the program has benefited them. Through doing this, hopefully admin will look at the course for what it is as something deeply rooted in the school's history and not something that can be simply erased.
